Navy Astronautics Group Established, 22 May 1962

The Navy’s first space satellite command, the Navy Astronautics Group, was established on 22 May 1962 at the Pacific Missile Range Headquarters, Point Mugu, Calif., under Commander James C. Quillen, Jr. In addition to its other duties, the new command was given responsibility for operating the Transit Navigational System being developed by the Navy for the Department of Defense.

The Navy Astronatics Group became today’s Naval Satellite Operations Center.

    I was stationed at “NAG” from about May, 1962 to July 1966. I would love to hear from anyone who might have been there during this period if possible.

    My dad was stationed there. Petty officer 2nd class. Machine accountant. I think. Gear and a feather. He is still in contact with a buddy named floyd. Not sure of his last name.
    I think my dae got out in’65.

    I was with NAG – detachment Bravo, Rosemont, Mn. from 64′ to 66′. CO was Commander Dodge.

    I was stationed Nag detachment Bravo ETN2 from 64-67 Remember Commander Dodge and the little incident with the Rosemont School bus.Funny Now, but wasn’t too funny then. Best time of my Naval career. Also remember you Nash.
