My dad was in this battle and received the Navy Cross for his bravery of rescuing 7 men from the steering room. Six of these men survived. The temperatures were upward of 180 degrees. Two men prior to my dad tried to rescue these men but passed out. My dad made it down there with only a gas mask (not the new breather). His name is Ernest R. Visto. After he pulled these men to safety, he collapsed. His story is told in "The Big E" and "And Then There Was One".
