The guided missile destroyer USS Cole was commissioned on 8 June 1996 at Port Everglades, FL.
In Part 1 of this video covering the ceremony, the ship’s namesake, Sargeant Darrell S. Cole, USMCR, is remembered. Cole was awarded the Medal of Honor posthumously for actions on Iwo Jima. At the commissioning ceremony, various speakers, including Secretary of Defense William Perry, discuss the importance of the Navy’s newest warship.
In Part 2 the ship is placed in commission, the first watch is set, and the ship is manned by her crew.
